Bokaap, Cape Town
The site sits in an intermediate zone between the emerging City and the historic Bokaap. The concept of my design is to link the City and the Bokaap through the circulation route pulling one between the two sides – and therefore maximising a sense of place in relation to ones exterior surroundings. The site rises 3m off the main Buitengracht Street by a staircase that extends through the building. The stairs bridge the interface between the City and the Bokaap where one at first has exposure to views of Table Mountain and then Signal Hill at the plan flips and accommodates a private function, a penthouse, higher up.
The circulation is functional and corresponds to the lift – you can get from A to B - yet the spaces in-between function like rooms or platforms were interesting moments can happen. Users are taken out of their passive mode and encouraged to pause, think and appreciate the space around them.
