Thermal Baths
Warmwaterberg, Klein Karoo

The project brief was to design a series of thermal baths feeding off the natural springs at the Warmwaterburg Thermal Bath site in the Klein Karoo. The site is dry, arid, yet a beautiful landscape. My response to the brief and the experience of the site, lead to a design that would slow down and magnify the experience of walking from the existing baths to the new baths – encouraging one to pause and think about the raw environment that surrounds. The pathway defines the process and circulation of the baths – going from reception to changing, to the first experience of water, to the themed baths and ending in an outdoor pool and restaurant projected to face a beautiful view. The proposal intends to manipulate the landscape in the least possible means, where the form sinks into the landscape and vegetation exists within the building site. One could imagine that the building has always been there, before human existence.
